Hillel Yaffe presents: innovations in midwifery

1/07/2013

As part of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center’s Maternity Wing’s extensive activity, last week a conference was held for the professional community on the subject of innovations in midwifery. Over 100 midwives and community nurses participated. Prof. Meir Oren opened the conference with greetings, saying that “We believe that establishing and fostering the relationship between the medical and nursing teams in the community and in the hospital, and between the hospitals and themselves, is important.” Ms. Dina Feinblatt, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, also welcomed participants.

During the conference, which was organized by Orly Basis, Head Nurse of Hillel Yaffe’s delivery room, a moving promotional movie was shown, which caused some of those present to shed tears. Subsequently, lectures were given on various subjects such as the impact of magnesium on the brain of the fetus by Prof. Moti Halak, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department; the use of ultrasound in decision making in fetuses with IUGR by Deputy Prof. Alon Shrim, director of the hospital’s Ultrasound Unit; how the woman giving birth and the hospital staff cope with vaginismus by Ms. Ira Linzki, a midwife in the delivery room; a lecture about perinatal pelvic floor injuries by Dr. Benny Feiner, head of urogynecology services; and a lecture on prenatal trauma and infections by Dr. Michael Feldman, Director of the Newborn and Neonatal Care Department.

Dr. David Haim, director of the hospital’s delivery room, ended the conference with a lecture about the relevance of the Friedman graph, and concluded in an optimistic tone, saying that the future of midwifery in the modern era with be more permissive, enabling a more liberal attitude in vaginal birth.

Prof. Halak noted that much praise was received from the conference’s guests, together with a request for a future continuation of such activity, something which undoubtedly will be realized in the coming months.
