Hillel Yaffe Medical Center: Outstanding student this year too

The same month in which schoolchildren get their report cards, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center also presents an impressive report of its accomplishments - meeting the Ministry of Health's quality indicators with very impressive scores

Today, for the second year in a row, the Ministry of Health issued its National Quality Indicators Report for the Israeli health care system. The National Quality Indicators Program for Israeli hospitals has been in effect since January 2013. Each year, new indicators are added. The program is designed to create transparency in the Israeli health care system through the medical care given to the public.

Last year, the presentation of the report included four targets, and Hillel Yaffe Medical Center was included among the seven hospitals that met all of the targets, some even with distinction. This year the report was more comprehensive, examining 10 quality indicators in various fields. This time, too, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center scored strong marks, placing it among the country's outstanding hospitals.

"If the hospital were a child bringing home a report card home, their parents would be very proud," said Dr. Mickey Dudikiewicz with satisfaction. "This is even truer when data has improved, even over last year, which proves that our employees are always checking, improving quality and have a strong desire to streamline processes, based on their patient-centric view."

As previously stated, the data present the quality indicators determined by the Ministry of Health. Hillel Yaffe Medical Center earned scores above the targets set for seven of the eight indicators, and for the remaining indicator, the score was close to the target that had been set. It is important to note that Hillel Yaffe delivered scores considered to be outstanding (in other words, above target and above the national average) for six indicators, and for one indicator - administration of antithrombotic treatment following a hysterectomy, Hillel Yaffe had the best score nationwide - 100%.

Excellence in seven out of 10 indicators. Hillel Yaffe

The indicators and the scores (the Ministry of Health's target for 2015 is in parentheses):

  • Administration of antithrombotic treatment when performing hysterectomy - 100% (target - 80%).
  • Administration of appropriate antibiotic treatment with cesarean section - 96% (target - 80%).
  • Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to elective colorectal surgery (colectomy) - 97% (target - 90%).
  • Performance of hip surgery within 48 hours of arrival at hospital - 83% (target 80%).
  • Antibiotic prophylaxis following hip surgery - 83% (target 80%).
  • Performance of cardiac catheterization within 90 minutes of arrival at the hospital - 87% (target 80%).
  • Recommending aspirin - 97% (target 95%).
  • Risk assessment for DVT - 75% (target 80%).

Targets have not yet been set for the two additional indicators, but because the hospitals were asked to report on them in 2015, the data was included in the report in order to provide an initial picture: time to performance of CT or MRI exam from arrival at the hospital - Hillel Yaffe presented a time of 41 minutes (seventh in Israel out of the 30 hospitals measured), and the rate of administration of tPA - treatment provided to patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke - here the hospital received a score of 1.3 (14th out of the 20 hospitals measured).

Another area on which the hospital was examined related to mental health service. Here, too, the staff proved that it does not rest on its laurels, showing 95% compliance with the target of providing a psychiatric care plan (third in the country), small number of repeat psychiatric hospitalizations (only 6% - second in Israel among the 18 hospitals examined), and first place in Israel for scheduling repeat appointments for patients.

"Clearly, the work is not easy, given the numerous tasks involved, and I am proud of our staff and their productive work. I hope we'll outscore ourselves next year," said Dr. Mickey Dudkiewicz when summarizing the data from the 2015 report.
