According to the data, approximately 37 million people worldwide are HIV carriers, and the majority are in Africa. The number of carriers in Israel is over 8,000 diagnosed cases, but the true figure is estimated at over 10,000 people, and the number is growing from year to year.
Who should get tested?
“We recommend that everybody be tested at least once in their lives. Obviously, high-risk populations should be tested at least twice a year,” said Dr. Vallery Istumin, Director of the HIV Clinic at Hillel Yaffe, and Dr. Sharon Reisfeld, Senior Physician in the Infectious Diseases Unit and a doctor at the clinic. “Today, AIDS is considered a chronic disease, which can be diagnosed in any of us. At our clinic at Hillel Yaffe, we meet the entire spectrum of this population, adults, young people, men and women, of all ethnicities and all sectors, heterosexuals and LBGT. However, because there is still a stigma and prejudice against the populations at risk of contracting HIV, some of the people who are not part of the known at-risk groups do not even bother to be tested. Even family physicians do not always suspect infection among patients who do not seem to be at risk of infection, and those patients do not come in for early diagnosis and treatment, if at all,” added the two.
Just come and get tested
The tests will be offered on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Outpatient Clinics - Inpatient Building A, Ground Floor, Rooms 126-127, from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The tests results will be delivered to the subjects over the phone within several days.
