Hillel Yaffe Trauma Unit Director collapses in the unit – colleagues save his life

Dr. Alexander Korin, a respected doctor at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center who was recently appointed Director of the Trauma Unit, received the gift of life from his colleagues who resuscitated him after he lost consciousness in the unit

The incident occurred last Thursday when Dr. Alexander Korin was completing his busy shift, as part of his life as a surgeon in general, and a trauma surgeon in particular. Dr. Younes Urwa, the surgeon with him in the room, watched his colleague suddenly lose consciousness. Dr. Urwa quickly assessed what was happening and called other doctors in the unit who began CPR, correctly diagnosed Dr. Korin’s critical situation, and used a defibrillator, thus saving his life.

Dr. Korin, sedated and on a ventilator, was urgently transferred to the Cardiac Catheterization Room, where he was catheterized by Dr. Aaron Frimmerman, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Unit. He regained consciousness the next day, without having suffered any cardiological or neurological damage.

Dr. Korin said that he had never had any heart trouble, and therefore the reason for his sudden collapse is not entirely clear, aside from his “usual overload” of work. “That is life as a surgeon, always hectic,” he concluded with a smile and thanked his colleagues and his great luck.

Dr. Aaron Frimmerman, who examined Dr. Korin this morning in the unit, explained that the incident appears to have been caused by severe cardiac arrhythmia, but Dr. Korin is still being diagnosed and observed, and right now mostly needs rest after his unexpected experience.
