Description

The Gastroenterology Institute offers medical-psychological services for its patients. All Institute patients are entitled to psychological treatment due to difficulties coping with their illness or state of health.

What is Medical Psychology?

Medical psychology is a specialist area in psychology that focuses on the emotional difficulties arising from a reaction to a sickness, physical injury, or various medical treatments. Medical psychology relates to treatment of a person with a disease during all stages of illness from receiving the diagnosis to coping with an acute or chronic disease and end-of-life processes. Treatment includes individual, couples, and group therapy and integrates use of psychophysiological methods, such as relaxation techniques and mindfulness.

Psychological treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s, and colitis, require, among other things, becoming used to physical, behavioral, nutritional, and social changes. Coping with the disease and the lifestyle changes involved can also cause emotional distress. The distress can be expressed in high levels of anxiety, worry, lower quality of life, mood disorders, and increased perception of pain. The psychological assistance helps cope with the distress and its consequences.

Psychological treatment can help in reinforcing efforts to cope with various psychological issues, such as:

  • Lowering levels of anxiety and depression
  • Controlling stress levels in life
  • Maintaining positive self-image
  • Developing a better understanding of feelings
  • Developing a better understanding of our bodies
  • Enjoying satisfactory and significant relationships
